Notes for newspaper

The normal flow of stories looks like this:

Lead
Transitional paragraph
Direct Quote - that supports the transitional paragraph above
Transitional paragraph
Direct Quote - that supports the transitional paragraph above
Transitional paragraph
Direct Quote - that supports the transitional paragraph above
Etc.

You can use an indirect quote in between a direct quote and the transitional paragraph, and on occasion you can use an indirect quote in place of a direct quote, but not every time.

Lead: between 25-35 words that catches the attention of the reader and focuses on something newsworthy from your interview subject at the start of the story. Remember that the first 5 words are key.

Transitional paragraph: these provide background information and introduce people or ideas in the quotes that follow.

Advice when interviewing:

1. Write down notes on paper in case technology doesn't work.
2.  Learn as much as possible about your subject BEFORE an interview.
3. Have a list of questions prepared and leave tougher questions for the end.
4. Let the subject know you are listening not just asking questions.
5. Write down keywords in your notebook
6. If the subject is speaking too fast, don’t be afraid to say “Please give me a second; I want to write that down.” Or, “That sounds important; can you please say it again?”
7. Remember your notes after an interview and make sure to type them up after.
8. Annotate your notes. That is, mark them with stars or arrows or marginalia such as “this quote good for end of story.”
9. Don't write down what you hear, write down what you see.
10. Arrive early to check out the scene; stay late to gather final thoughts.
11. Call back a source to gather something you missed or to check the accuracy of something you are not sure of.
12. Always be polite and respect the subject's mood.
13. Ask one question at a time.
14. Ask open-ended questions, not ones that can be answered with yes or no.
15. Be patient. Don't break the silence with another question.

Merger review

  1. I think the spacing, lighting, angle, focus, object all could be possibly messed up in a merger photograph.
  2. In front of the pit, in the pit, in the cafeteria, in any classroom really, I think many places can be used. You just have to be creative with the placing of your subject.
  3. I think I would put my subject all in different places and in different positions. I think i would like to take it in a area outdoors.
  4. I think bright colors or patterns to make the subject pop in the photograph.

Warm-Up

1. My favorite photo is of a mom and daughter with curly hair and the daughter is sitting on her mom's lap.

2. I think most could but some would be taken on a DSLR camera.

3. I think some of the apps used allowed the photograph to have more emotion and feel to it. I think it also helped add to the photos.

4.

  • I think I would use certain apps to edit certain things like saturation, focus, and contrast.
  • I think I can also get advice from other photographers and see others point of views for photography.

HDR Photography Intro

1. What manipulations to the camera will you need to make to create an HDR image?
2. What equipment will we use to take this type of image?
3. What is the reason someone might take an HDR image?
4. What can we expect to happen with the images once we merge them together, what will we see that we might not have seen with just one photo?

  1. To create an HDR image, you must take multiple photographs with varying shutter speeds and aperture combos.
  2. You'll need a camera, tripod, and HDR photo-blending software.
  3. Many people like to take HDR photographs because of the outstanding beauty of them. HDR photographs transform reality into a high-def dreamscape.
  4. Once the images are merged, you can see more detail of a image or it can create a better photograph that is visually more eye-appealling to the viewer. HDR photographs also make the photograph look more like you were actually at the place the photograph was taken. It also helps with lighting and focus points. It overall allows you to produce the best photograph you can possibly take.

My Opinions Story

Painting a New Picture
By: Callie Richards

Art has allowed the most creative of people to express themselves in many different ways. Artists put heart and soul into their artwork. Art has started conversations based on a person's opinion and can start an uproar in social media occasionally.
In fashion, a creative quality is very useful and can make you more powerful as a fashion idol and earn you more fans. As a young artist, I enjoy seeing others work and hearing other artists opinions on any of my art. Art nowadays is a big thing on social media, many young artists are using social media as an outlet to show off any art pieces they have. Many Austin artists debate on certain art types on whether certain things can be considered art for example, graffiti.
Graffiti is seen as trashy and rebellious, many people disagree that graffiti is art and should be considered as art. I believe graffiti is its own type of art, it allows the artist to express emotion and character, many people think of it as a "hipster" or "rebel" type of art. Many supporters believe it is because it shows the person's creativeness, skill, and imagination.
Others also think it is because it allows a person power to have a voice and say something or show something they believe through art. Many people against graffiti believe it is vandalism and that it is rude/disrespectful to whom ever the place was vandalized.
Others also think it isn't art because it is vulgar and ugly to look at, they think it isn't enjoyable to look at or that it isn't really art, that it doesn't fit into the "art category". I believe art should be expressed no matter what form it may be, people should have the right to show what they have created or imagined. I think graffiti is just a different style of art, and is acceptable if it is in certain places, like if a place actually requests for it to have graffiti or a rundown/abandoned place.
I think disrespecting a property of its "beauty" is unacceptable and is just rude, it's unasked for and rude. I think graffiti allows people to speak their mind but it should only be done in acceptable places.
Art is about expressing yourself and being you. It's about showing creativity, skill, imagination, technique, and a voice. Art should be shared with everyone, and it should be critiqued so that artist may improve them selves and become even better as a artist/person.
Express yourself may it be through a paintbrush, a pencil, or a mouth. Let all of your inner creativeness shine through and let it be "painted" into your life.

Opinion Writing Part 2

#1. What was one idea that the writer gave in the Wide Range of Topics section that you can use as you start deciding on a topic?

Conversational topics or news stories are good because they give the reader something to think about.

#2. What was one idea the writer gave in the Opinions Pieces section that you should remember as you are writing your piece?

Details matter, state your opinion and state why you agree or disagree to the topic.

#3. List three suggestions the writer makes in the Personal Essays and Crafts section that you will use as you write.

1. In a personal essay you have the freedom to think what you like on a subject, but your reader should go away with a good idea of why you feel that way.

2.  Think of your essay as a camera lens. You might start by describing a fine detail (your personal experience or perspective, a specific moment in the narrative), then open up the lens to take in the wide view (the general/global backdrop), then close the piece by narrowing back to the fine detail. Or go the other way. Start with the wide view, focus in, then open up to the wide view again.

3.  A quotation from someone famous or something you’ve read/overhead. (“Be careful” were the last words my father said to me each time I left the house.)

Earthquake Story

An earthquake rocked the San Francisco Bay area Monday morning. The quake struck at 8:12 a.m. PDT

Twenty-one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake.

Three of the six people injured were hurt seriously enough to require hospitalization and were transported to Hayward General Hospital, according to Vu. There wasn't any major injuries that were reported to police in Hayward.

"Names of the dead are being withheld pending notifications of families," Vu said.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, was under the Hayward Hills, according to Penny Gertz, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. Gertz called the quake a “strong one” and said it occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills.

"People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake," Gertz says.

"A building housing McHenry’s Auto Supply at 2342 Plum St. partially collapsed, killing two people and injuring six other people." According to Jennifer Vu, a public information officer from the Hayward Fire Department.

Hayward firefighters used ropes to stabilize the auto supply shop, conducting a search of the building and capped a gas line after detecting a gas leak at the site.

Hayward resident, Mike Beamer, whose apartment is across the street from McHenry’s, says he felt a large rolling motion that lasted for about 30 seconds, with a big jolt coming in the middle of it.

“I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That’s when the screaming start across the street," Beamer says.

Huntington Story

Janice Jones is 53 years old and lives in Barstow, California, according to California Highway Patrol press liaison Tammy Rye.

Jones’ dog, a Pomeranian named Tombo, was placed in the care of the Huntington Beach Animal Control officers. The dog seemed to be malnourished, according to Janet Ngo, one of the animal control officers, and had fresh cigarette burns on its forehead.

“It could have done with a little less abuse and a few more of those pork chops,” Ngo says.

"Jones was eating pork chops in the back of her motor home," Rye said, which was parked on Beach Boulevard near Highway 1, when her dog knocked her 9 mm handgun off a seat.
The weapon discharged when it hit the floor, and the bullet passed through Jones; leg and through the side of the vehicle, according to Rye.

“It could have been worse,” Rye says. “The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank.”

Jones was shot in the right leg around 10 p.m. Wednesday, Rye said.

"Jones was transported to Huntington Beach Hospital via ambulance and later was transported to Irvine Medical Center, Rye says."

Rye said officers cited Jones for expired plates and the county’s district attorney’s office was considering whether to charge her in relation to the gun accident.

"Jones didn’t even have a permit for the gun," Rye said.

Ngo indicated that her office would explore filing animal abuse charges against Jones.

Nut Graf

A "Nut Graf" is editorial slang that many editors use, it refers to a sentence that tells you the importance of a story. A Nut Graf also tells you why a story may be important. A Nut Graf is important in stories because it tells the reader why they should be reading the story.
A "Nut Graf" is used in many stories as a summary of the importance of a story. A Nut Graf explains the lead's connection to the rest of the story. A Nut Graf helps you decide if you want to keep reading the story.

a. Justin Mott
b. stories
c. focus, telling a story, portfolio building
d.  point of view and emotion
e. I liked this photography but I think they could do better on their focus and portfolio building.

2.
a. The judges liked the use of focus and they also liked composition. The judges liked how they photographer could tell a story and capture emotion in certain photographs.
b. I think the photographer did well with focus and capturing emotion. I think they could really work on not complicating photographs because then the viewer is confused on what the subject is.

3. They go through each contestant and they list/discuss strengths and weaknesses of each person's work. They talk about how well a certain photographer did with a topic and how well they captured each and every picture.

Part 2:

1. Girl in circle pool- I agree with the judges and I like how the photographer captured the subject and the use of shapes throughout the photograph. I also like the lighting, it shows more to the story.

2. Greyhound race image- The judges didn't like the background and how both dogs were cut out of image. I believe the image was very well done and had amazing focus. I think this photograph was very well done to show action.
